President and Chief Executive Officer
Charlie Alexander has been active in the field of transplantation since 1995. He began his career at Infinite legacy as an operating room perfusionist and later fulfilled the role of organ recovery coordinator. In 1999, he started the Hospital Development department for the organization and later became the manager of Hospital Services. In 2003, he became the director of Clinical and Hospital Services. In April of 2004, Charlie was recruited to become the president & chief executive officer of the organization.
Since the early 1990s, Charlie has given more than 200 professional presentations on organ and tissue donation and transplantation. His work has been published in several professional publications, including case studies in organ donor management, the use of airway pressure release ventilation (APRV) modes of ventilation in organ donors, continuous veno-venous hemodialyis (CVVHD) and donation after cardiac death (DCD).
An active member of the North American Transplant Coordinators Organization (NATCO) since 1996, he has chaired a number of committees, including the NATCO Introductory Course, Membership and Public Policy. He served on the Board of Directors as secretary for two years, president-elect and then as president from 2003-2006.
Charlie served as the president for the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO) in 2018 and serves on the Board of Directors for Donate Life Maryland.
He also served on various committees for the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), and was elected to serve as the first non-physician president of UNOS in 2010. Charlie continues to remain active on UNOS committees and served on the UNOS board in 2017.
Charlie has held board positions for various transplant related organizations including Donate Life Maryland (co-founder and board chair 2009), The Organ Donation and Transplantation Alliance, LifeNet Health Donation Board, Regenerations Technology Donor Services Board, and the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation (MTF) Donation Board of Trustees.
His prior clinical experiences include working as a registered nurse in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Trauma Resuscitation Unit (TRU) at The R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland.
Charlie earned a Bachelor of Science from the School of Marketing and Economics at Towson University, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Villa Julie College (now Stevenson University), a Master of Nursing and Master of Business Administration from The Johns Hopkins University.
